Life in a shampoo bottle

Life is like a bottle of shampoo. You can lift it, check how much it weighs, and if you're lucky it might feel like it's still full
Life is full of little moments that capture us based on the promise of a payoff. We court women for the promise of love, we work hard for the promise of a fulfilling career... Sometimes the promise is much smaller: We share a drink for the promise of a kiss, we work late for the promise of raise... But however you look at it, promises are a driving force in our lives, even though we often end up empty handed.

A friend of mine once told me, long ago, that life is like a bottle of shampoo. You can lift it, check how much it weighs, and if you're lucky it might feel like it's still full. But sometimes, you grab a bottle and it feels full, so you open it to put some shampoo in your hand, only to find out you're holding a diluted bottle, a case of shampoo running out, to which water was added to add volume to what was left of it. And so you watch the liquid roll quickly out of its container, onto your hand, and slip through your fingers, leaving you with only traces of soapy water in your palm.

I believe these moments are the worst. The unfruitful pursuit of a promise leaves the idea of the payoff intact, even if unattained, while the pursuit of an inflated promise leaves a bitter sting, and an unpleasant memory.

On a related note, people are like shampoo bottles, some are full, others less, and a few seem promising but turn out to have very little soap. But that's a story for another day.

Good night.
